Fire has burnt down more than 500 houses in one of the camps hosting thousands of South Sudanese refugees in El-Hajj Yousif in Khartoum-North.

The fire started at around 11:00 O’clock this morning.

The secretary in charge of the camp, Paul Abdalla Dominic, says there were no lives lost but he says the refugees whose houses have been burnt lost all their properties.

Speaking to Eye Radio’s Sundown from Khartoum, Dominic said half of the camp has been damaged by the inferno.

“The fire started in one tukul, we tried to extinguish it, but the wind was strong. So fire burnt down the houses. As we speak now, the fire is still burning the camp and firefighters are now struggling to put it off. Now all the residents of the camp are out and we have with us Sudanese authorities.” He said.

“The damage was huge, but we have not lost any life only the houses that have been burnt.” He told or reporter.

Paul Abdalla says this is the third time that there has been a fire in the camp.

There are about 105 thousand South Sudanese refugees who are living in camps on the outskirt of Sudanese capital, Khartoum.
