Acute shortage of goods in Rumbek markets-Lakes

Author : | Published: Friday, October 31, 2014

Lakes State Minister of Information says the markets in Rumbek have run out of goods due to bad roads.

He said more than twenty shops have closed down because there are no more goods coming into the state from Wau or Juba.

Dhieu Wol described the situation in Rumbek as “shocking” because the prices of few basic commodities found in the markets have gone up.

“The situation is really very bad I can’t describe it. The prices have skyrocketed… If you see there is nothing in the markets, the markets have run out of everything, some shops, about twenty have closed down and there is no business going on.” He said.

Wol said the roads connecting Lakes State with other states are in bad condition.

“Those people who are dealing in commodities such as rice, maize and sugar, cannot bring them, and as such, those things are no long in the markets. We have nothing in the markets; starting from mineral water up to things like sold or dry cell.” He said.

He said the road between Terekeka County in Central Equatoria State and Rumbek has been closed since May.

Wol said the World Food Program and the State Government have promised to repair the roads that connect Lakes State with other states.
