Cairo embassy reopens

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the South Sudanese embassy in Egypt has now reopened.

It was closed this week due to a strike by students on government scholarship, who were demanding unpaid allowances. They say the embassy has failed to pay the money for almost a year now.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mawien Makol, told Eye Radio that the ambassador to Egypt is in Cairo and will address the demand of the students.

“The ministry of education, science and technology has communicated with the embassy and the embassy is trying to find out the way to solve the issue,” Amb Makol said.

There are about 160 university students on government scholarship in Egypt. Each receives $100 dollars per month as pocket money.

The students say they cannot afford the cost of rent and feeding. They want to be paid immediately.
