Crisis has affected constitutional review process – NCRC

Author : | Published: Thursday, December 18, 2014

The chairperson of the National Constitutional Review Commission says the conflict in the country has affected their work.

Professor Akolda Maan Tier says the mandate of the commission will end on the 31st of this month without meeting its mandate.

He says the commission was unable to conduct civic education exercise in the areas affected by the on-going conflict.

Addressing the media in Juba this morning, Professor Akolda said the commission failed to get support from international experts to help them make final draft of the constitution because they have no money.

“The funding agencies have stopped helping the NCRC like the USAID and the other agencies which were helping us have stopped their assistance and in fact many of them have left South Sudan,” said Prof Akolda.

“It is unlikely that the government of South Sudan can alone undertake Civic Education.”

Prof Akolda said the commission has requested the President to extend the mandate of the commission to enable them complete their work.

South Sudan is currently using a transitional constitution. The NCRC was supposed to have prepared a draft of a permanent constitution by January of last year, but missed that deadline because of a lack of funding.

Parliament granted the commission an extension until the end of this year.
