The UN says more than 200 UN police have been deployed in four UNMISS camps in South Sudan.

“Right now we have two hundred and forty UN police who have arrived in Juba and have been deployed in Malakal, Bentiu, Juba and Bor and they from police units to help maintain a sense of security especially in the protection sites of the UNMISS camps,” UNMISS spokesperson Ariane Quentier told Eye Radio.

She said about 5,500 peacekeepers will start arriving in South Sudan from next week.

“When it comes to the military force, this is something in process; we’re waiting for the first contingents to arrive next week.

“We are currently finalizing arrangements with other African countries to see who will be available to come to Juba.”

Ms Quentier said the UN peacekeepers will be deployed across the country to protect civilians.

“The United Nations is committed to protect civilian populations wherever on its compounds and outside its compounds.”

Ms Quentier denied allegations that armed people have been allowed into UNMISS compounds.

She reiterated that UN bases are a gun-free zones.

“All residents at UNMISS camps are properly checked for weapons and harmful substances.”

Earlier this week, the police said armed criminals have been seeking shelter at UN compounds, creating insecurity at night.
