The European Union’s Humanitarian Commission says they expect the warring parties in South Sudan to reach an agreement within the 45-day period in order to end the nine-month conflict.

The conflict has caused humanitarian crisis, including displacement of hundreds of thousands of civilians, starvation and outbreak of diseases.

As result, humanitarian agencies and western countries are working with the government of South Sudan to contain the situation.

“Humanitarian aid is not the solution to the crisis, the solution must be the political one,” Jean-Louis de Brouwer, EU Director of Operations, told the media yesterday.

The warring parties – the government and the SPLM-in Oppositin – are engaged in peace talks in Ethiopia.

“We are hopeful that the ongoing process in Addis Ababa under the IGAD leadership will be conducive to some kind of political settlement and political agreement and political agreement, which will help or create the condition for a genuine reconstitution and re-building of this country,” said Mr Jean-Louis.

He said EU is still supporting the South Sudan Peace Process.

Mr. Jean-Louis announced that the EU Commission will provide more than 85.5 million Euros this year to respond to the unfolding and intensifying humanitarian crisis in South Sudan.

He also said the EU will contribute an additional 15 million Euros for the urgent needs of South Sudanese refugees in the neighboring countries.

The EU official also urged the warring parties to respect the work of the humanitarian agencies operating in South Sudan.
