The food situation has improved in South Sudan, the Food and Agriculture Organization has said.

The United Nations agency says more than 2 million people have been saved from the risk of famine.

“It’s better to say that the effort of South Sudanese combining with the effort of the humanitarian partners have pulled back two million people from extreme level of food insecurity and also from the brink of famine,” said Sue Lautze, FAO representative and the UN’s Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan.

Ms Sue warns that despite the improvement, 1.5 million people are projected to remain severely food insecure until the end of 2014.

She says in the dry season, some rivers will dry up, depriving the people of fish and other foods.

“The problem comes when dry season comes; the river literally dries up and with that you lose the fish, the wild fruits and the rest of food.”
