The government delegation in the peace talks says they are committed to the continued negotiations despite recent fighting between government forces and forces loyal to Dr. Riek Machar in Malakal.

The government delegation spokesperson, Michael Makuei Lueth, said they will negotiate peace.

“We will not attack any rebel position but we are only entitled to defend ourselves in case we are attacked,” he told Eye Radio.

“This is the situation despite the flagrant violation of the cessation of hostilities by the rebels. Nevertheless, the government of South Sudan will proceed to negotiate peace for the people of South Sudan.”

Mr. Makuei said the government deplored the renewal of fighting in Malakal town this week.

“The stand of our government is total condemnation of all that happened, because we, as the government of South Sudan, we’re committed to the signed cessation of hostilities and abide by it.”
