Gov’t officials issue bounced checks – Bol Mel

Author : | Published: Thursday, February 11, 2016

Some government officials have been issuing bounced checks to businessmen since July last year, the chamber of commerce has said.

The chairman of the chamber, Benjamin Bol Mel, says he has received complaints from many businessmen who have not been able to cash the checks from the banks.

Mr Bol told a news conference in Juba this afternoon that traders feel they are being deceived.

“I’m going to form a committee and it will move to both central bank and the ministry of finance to find out why there are things going on like that,” Mr Bol said.

The value of the checks is not clear. But Mr Bol says some government officials ask for pay from businessmen in order to issue genuine checks.

‘Resist bribery’

He has advised the businessmen to resist what he calls bribery.

“Stand up for your right. We cannot encourage corruption. Do not bribe anybody,” Mr Bol added.

The government is yet to comment. But Mr Bol said he would try his best to bring the matter to the direct attention of the president if the concerned officials fail.
