End the Impunity Organization is urging the government to ensure that there is justice for crimes against journalists in South Sudan.

Organization’s Regional Director Angelina Daniel Seeka says those who attack journalists must be prosecuted.

There has been reported cases of harassment of journalists. The latest is an incident in which Classic FM 92.3 reporter Dhieu Williams was assaulted for reporting live using a cell phone.

Ms Seeka called for an end to arbitrary arrests and detention of journalists in South Sudan. She said those who arrest and detain journalists must account for the violations they commit.

“We are calling for justice in return for all the crimes that happen whether against journalists or against non-journalists,” Ms Seeka told Eye Radio’s Dawn Program.

Yesterday, the World marked the United Nations first International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.

The date was chosen in remembrance of two French journalists who were assassinated in Mali last year.

Today South Sudan celebrates the day under the theme: “Together for the Safety and Protection of Journalists.”

The occasion is jointly organized by End the Impunity Organization, the Union of Journalists in South Sudan and UNESCO.
