Kiir-Riek one-on-one meeting resumes

Author : | Published: Wednesday, March 4, 2015

President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar have resumed face to face talks in Addis Ababa this morning to discuss the contentious issues in the peace process.

They met for more than six hours yesterday but failed to agree on the system of governance, power sharing and the reintegration of forces during the interim period.

The SPLM in Oppositions wants federalism to be implemented immediately after the agreement.

“The principals started their talks on federal system of governance and there was a disagreement over it. The rebels’ position was that it should be declared immediately as federal system,” Information Minister Micahel Makuei told the press in Addis Ababa.

But the government says studies should be made on the system before adopting it.

The SPLM in Opposition also wants the forces of the warring parties to be reintegrated at the end of the interim period of two and half years.

The government says they should be reintegrated within the pre-interim period of three months.

President Salva Kiir and Dr Riek have now resumed discussions on the issues.
