President Salva Kiir has signed with his Egyptian counterpart an agreement on water management and hydroelectric power projects in South Sudan.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ambassador Mawien Makol says the leaders agreed that Egypt will open up water ways in the River Nile, build a dam in Nimule and set up agricultural projects in different parts of the country.

Ambassador Mawien said the projects amount to more than $2.5 million.

“They are things to do with the management of water resources that they have signed between the two countries and Egypt of course had promised before that it is going to do projects to do with agriculture and the management of water,” Amb Makol explained to Eye Radio.

“We have dams that are going to be explored. We have Wau water project. You know some of the rivers in the Sudd areas are becoming closed now and the Egyptian government can help us open those rivers up so that the flow of water is smooth in the Sudd region.”

Cairo is opposed to a new agreement signed by the East African countries reducing Egypt’s share of the Nile Water.

President Salva Kiir led a delegation comprising of cabinet ministers and businessmen to Egypt on Thursday.

The visit was in response to an invitation by Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Sisi.
