Lakes IDPs in need of humanitarian assistance

Author : | Published: Wednesday, May 27, 2015

Authorities in Lakes State have called for humanitarian support to people displaced by the recent fighting in Rumbek Center.

Officials say several were killed and others displaced from their homes during the fighting more than a month ago.

Women and children are now camping on open grounds in the town.

The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs says the affected people urgently need food and essential items.

“Women are supposed to be helped by the NGOs to enable them to buy or purchase the utensils. Even if we support them, we government, it will not be so much like the support of the NGOs,” Mr Martin Makur, Director General, told Eye Radio.

The church has also called for aid agencies to help the displaced.

“It is good for organizations to come back again to help; like now, some mothers remain without husbands and they don’t have anything,” said Monica Achan, Chairperson of Women Union for Episcopal Church of South Sudan in Rumbek.

The two officials spoke to Eye Radio after a visit to the displaced in Rumbek yesterday.

There have been reports of communal violence in the state. Last year, the National Legislative Assembly reported that over 500 people were killed. They often attribute it to retaliatory attacks.
