Leer: Beware of landmines

Author : | Published: Tuesday, September 16, 2014

The landmines department in Leer County in Unity State has urged the residents to be aware of landmines.

The County Landmine Coordinator, Gattiek Koang, has cautioned that people who burn grass and children who play with exhausted bullets can detonate landmines and risk their lives.

It is not clear when the landmines were planted in the area. However, there has been fighting between the SPLA and the SPLM-IO forces in the area.

Mr. Koang urged everyone to be aware of landmines because Leer County is one of the areas that have been affected by the ongoing conflict.

He said they have not yet started the process of removing landmines due to lack of available equipment.
