The National Organizing Committee for the celebrations of the World Radio Day 2016 is urging the authorities to release two journalists who have been in detention without charges.

Radio Journalist George Livio Bahara was arrested more than a year ago in Wau over an accusation that he was mobilizing members of the community to join the SPLM in Opposition.

Meanwhile, Journalist Afandy Joseph was detained in December last year after he wrote in Al-Thabeer newspaper an article criticizing the ruling SPLM. The paper was later closed down.

The chairman of the Organizing Committee and Secretary General of the Union of Journalists, Edward Ladu Terso, says the two journalists should be freed or charged.

“We celebrate and dedicate this World Radio Day (Feb 13) to the release of these media people because they have served like us, they have served humanity, they have served their brothers and sisters in South Sudan, they have even served this government, they have served even the security organs they have served in different ways in one way or another,” Mr Terso said.

Mr Terso said the public should not be left in confusion about the fate of the two journalists.

He made the call today during a press conference ahead of the World Radio Day in South Sudan.

On Saturday, South Sudan will join the rest of the world in celebrating the World Radio Day, under the theme: Radio in times of Peace and Conflicts.
