Former UN security guards protest over unpaid benefits

Author : | Published: Monday, August 3, 2015

Former UNMISS security guards who demonstrated this morning over unpaid post service benefits says they will continue with their protest tomorrow.

They had blocked the movement in and out of the compound at the UN House along Juba Yei Road.

The Former UNMISS security guards say their pensions have not been paid upon completion of their services in 2014.

“We did not say that we don’t want the jobs, but it is you who told us that ‘Please your job has come to an end’. So, if you stop a person, make sure that you give him everything that belongs to him,” argues Zonokumbo Edward, representative.

He says they wrote a letter to the UNMISS concerning the issue, but they were not satisfied with the response.

“We want to know today that the details of our pensions have been cleared to us within the 10 states,” Mr Edward demanded.

Some of the demonstrators also spoke to Eye Radio. They demanded that the Representative of the Secretary General address their grievances.

“It seems the UN leadership is not even frank in paying the South Sudanese national staff, because we have been told and they are not doing what they are telling us,” said a visibly unhappy demonstrator.

Meanwhile, Stephani L. Scheer, Director of Mission Support, says UNMISS will pay them at the end of the month.

“The UN always pays its pensioners, but it takes some time,” said Ms Scheer. “It has a long process but it is coming I guaranteed you. They have said it will be done by the end of this month. So please be patient a little bit longer you will have it I promise you.”
