Small arms bureau lacks resources to mark guns

Lack of resources is hindering the marking of arms in South Sudan, the Bureau of Small Arms and Community Security has said.

The Acting director for the bureau, Salah Agrey, told Eye Radio that the marking is aimed at identifying the owner of the gun at the time of disarmament.

He says it will also ensure that guns that have been collected are not returned to the civilians.

“We have trained people from army, police and prison. they are the one who mark the arm,” he said.

Mr. Agrey says the bureau has three mechanics and equipment for marking the arms. But they lack transport facilities for these machines.

“We don’t have vehicles and these machines need three vehicles including generator,” he added.

Mr. Salah adds that the office has worked with the police and the community to assist the security forces to combat crimes.

The Bureau of Small Arms and Community Security was established in 2008 with the aim of educating people about the dangers of weapons.
