South Sudan plans to stop dual citizenship

Author : | Published: Sunday, October 19, 2014

Vice President James Wani Igga says the country may not allow dual citizenship.

He said south Sudanese with two nationalities are not fully committed to serve the country of origin.

Mr. Igga was addressing staff at the ministry of foreign Affairs and International cooperation in Juba.

“Soon we are going to restrict this issue of double nationalities because his/her commitment is half,” said the VP.

“When there is anything – when something dangerous happens, he will be the first person to run away because he doesn’t mind.

“They go and leave you behind; but for you, if that is your only country, you will be patient. Things will improve.”

The Transitional Constitution for South Sudan allows for dual citizenship.

During the 21 year civil war, thousands of South Sudanese sought refuge in western countries that allow dual citizenship.

Some of them who have acquired other nationalities are now returning home with various knowledge and skills to help in the nation-building.
