President Salva Kiir says those who are convicted of murder during the December incident would be sentenced to death.

The president was addressing the nation during the 31st anniversary of the SPLA-SPLM at freedom square in Juba this morning.

He said those who claimed to have killed in his name must also face justice.

“For those who committed crimes in December thinking that they were doing something good for the government, or in my support, I said on the 16th of December last year that anybody who takes the law into his or her own hand, to kill other citizens in the name that he or she is supporting me, is a liar,” he said.

“They are no supporting me and I will not accept that.

“The investigation committee, which I have set up under the leadership of Justice John Wol Makech, has to see into it that all these people who committed crimes must be punished.

‘If you killed a person, you must also be punished by death.”

President Kiir congratulated the army for respecting his orders not to attack the SPLA-In Opposition forces following the ceasefire agreement he signed with Dr. Riek Machar last week.

He told the soldiers not to move away from their bases to attack the opposition forces, but must report to the government if they are attacked.

During the second week of March 2014, over 100 soldiers held for suspected crimes and human rights violations in relation to the mid-December violence reportedly escaped from the military barracks where they were being held.
