Former SPLM detainees to return to Juba soon

A member of the SPLM Political Bureau said senior SPLM members known as the former detainees will soon return to Juba.

The three factions; the SPLM, the SPLM-In Opposition and the Former Detainees signed an agreement on Wednesday in Arusha, Tanzania to reunite the party.

Daniel Awet Akot said the former detainees, who include Pagan Amum, Deng Alor and John Luk, will attend the next SPLM meeting in Juba.

“I am grateful to the people of South Sudan that your suffering will be stopped. You will see this people coming here in the next few days. You will the FD (former Detainees) coming here so that the next meeting will not start in Arusha, but start here in Juba,” he said

“So we will hold a press conference, we hold rallies so that you are informed exactly what happened in Arusha. What we could not do in the government, we will do it in the party.”

The agreement requires the leaders to apologize publicly to the people of South Sudan.

The three SPLM groups also agreed to develop a comprehensive program for national unity, peace and reconciliation, healing among the people of South Sudan.

Previous decisions dismissing top SPLM leaders and members were also revoked in the agreement.
