TROIKA presses for lasting solutions to the conflict

The Troika is urging the warring parties to find a durable solution to the conflict in South Sudan.

The special envoys of U.S, UK, and Norway to Sudan and South Sudan have been in the country this week.

The three envoys visit Jonglei State capital Bor, and met with President Salva Kiir in Juba.

They also met with the minister of defense and the minister in the office of the President and other stakeholders.

Norway Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, Jens-Petter Kjemprud, told a joint press conference in Juba that what the people of South Sudan need urgently is peace.

 

“We decided to come here as TROIKA; US, UK and Norway to what we see as a critical juncture after the talks in Bahir Dar…. The people of South Sudan are suffering, the humanitarian situation is very serious and we urged them to leave personal ambitions aside, and look for peace as soon as possible through the IGAD peace process.” Kjemprude said.

The, Honorable Matthew Cannell, says the immediate priority for the warring parties to stop the violence.

 

“We see the immediate priority is stopping the fighting and security and a sustainable peace. But also the immediate humanitarian situation clearly needs a leaving.” The UK Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan asserted.

 

The envoys reiterated their call to the Government and the SPLM-SPLA in Opposition to end the conflict and bring lasting peace to South Sudan.

During their meetings with officials from the national government, the three envoys said there is lot to be done to create confidence for those who are living in camps inside the UN Mission to enable them to return to their homes.

They also discussed with the government several other issues including the new security bill, the NGO bill, protection of civilians and the role of UNMISS.
