Update: Military restores calm in Yei

Military personnel were deployed on the streets of Yei town last night to maintain security after clashes between senior SPLA soldiers over pay.

“I was also on the streets last night to confirm by myself and I saw military men patrolling the whole streets of Yei town on their van,” reported Daniel Friday, Eye Radio’s Correspondent in Yei.

“No more gun shots were heard last night and business has resumed normally in the town this morning.”

At least three soldiers were killed in the incident which occurred on Tuesday.

15 others injured in a clash in Yei River County in Central Equatoria State.

The soldiers are members of the Wounded Heroes unit.

The Police Commissioner in the county, Colonel Jeremiah Maker Nai, said the fighting resulted from a salary dispute between two military leaders.

He said soldiers headed by one Major Akech Majak clashed with those headed by another lieutenant Colonel Isaac Lual.

Five soldiers who were critically injured have been airlifted to Juba Teaching Hospital.
