WFP suspends transporting food via road

The World food Program has suspended road transport of food items to the northern part of the country.

This comes after 45 trucks carrying food were looted by gunmen in Mundri West over the weekend.

Public Communication Officer George Fominyen says the attack followed the insecurity in Western Equatoria, where SPLA soldiers fought in Mundri town last week.

He says this state is the main transport supply route to the north.

“The trucks were attacked on the road between Central Equatoria and Western Equatoria while carrying food towards Lakes, Warrap, Western Bahr El Ghazal and Unity States. We are still to determine the exact among of the food that were stolen, but this is quite heavy,” Mr Fominyen told Eye Radio.

“WFP has had to temporarily suspend all roads movement of food along this road until we assure the road is safe.”

Fominyen says lack of food aid will affect thousands of people in the four states and cause more food insecurity.
