Warrap says calm restored in Tonj North after deadly attack
Authorities in Warrap State say calm has returned to Tonj North County following a deadly attack at a cattle camp that left dozens of people dead and 50 others wounded.
Warrap State Information Minister Wol Mayom says the incident occurred at around 4 a.m. on August 9 at Ariec cattle camp in Akop Payam.
According to Mayom, 37 people from the Pan Ariik community were killed, while 11 others from the Apuk-Padoc community also lost their lives. He says 15 attackers were killed during the incident.
“The security situation in Warrap State is relatively calm across its six counties. However, on August 9th, 2026, at around 4 a.m., an incident occurred at Ariec cattle camp in Akop Payam, Tonj North County,” Mayom said.
The minister says 50 people were wounded in the attack, with 17 of those seriously injured evacuated to Wau Civil Hospital.
He adds that an unspecified number of cattle and goats were also raided during the incident.
Mayom says security forces were deployed to the area the following day after poor road conditions caused by the rainy season delayed an immediate response.
“Fortunately, on the following day, security forces were deployed, and the situation is calm,” he said.
The minister says the state government, working with local authorities, is investigating the attack and gathering information on the whereabouts of suspected attackers.
“The government is currently investigating the incident, focusing on the area of Alabek, where suspects are believed to be hiding, possibly within Tonj North or a place called Malidit,” Mayom said.
He says authorities are also working to identify areas where suspected criminals may cross into Warrap State.
Mayom says the long-term government plan is to conduct a comprehensive disarmament campaign across Warrap, Unity and Western Bahr el Ghazal states to reduce recurring communal violence.
“We extend our condolences to the families of those affected and strongly condemn the incident. We urge the public to remain calm as the government continues its investigation and response,” he said.
