Par’s SPLM-IO faction affirms election participation, condemns travel restrictions on former officials
JUBA — The Political Bureau of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) has announced readiness to contest elective seats across the country in the elections.
During its meeting held on October 18, 2026, and chaired by Interim Chairman Amb. Stephen Par Kuol, the Political Bureau reviewed party restructuring efforts, inter-party dialogue, and preparations for the electoral cycle.
Among its resolutions, the party established a committee dedicated to promoting political engagement and consultations with political parties and peace partners on matters of concern.
The meeting addressed concerns regarding Republican Order No. 36-10/2026, issued on October 15, 2026, which restricts the travel of former officials who reverted to citizen status following their relief from office.
The SPLM-IO leadership condemned the order, warning that it constitutes an infringement on freedom of movement as enshrined in the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan, 2011 (as amended).
The party stated that travel restrictions during an election season affect competition by hindering candidates and former officials from engaging with citizens and conducting campaign activities.
Concluding the session, the Political Bureau called upon party members and supporters to remain united and focused on institutional reorganization while reaffirming its commitment to dialogue, democratic participation, and the safeguarding of citizens’ rights.
