Juba City Council shuts down Hai Malakal tea spots over alleged drug sales
Juba City Council has shut down roadside tea spots in Hai Malakal following allegations of illegal drug sales and consumption during an inspection on Wednesday.
Deputy Mayor for Social Services Wol Mathok Diing said illicit substances were seized and some individuals detained during the operation targeting unauthorised roadside structures.
Wol said the crackdown is part of the council’s efforts to tackle drug abuse among young people, illegal alcohol sales and criminal activities in the capital.
He did not disclose the quantity or types of drugs seized during the operation.
“Some of the priorities of the City Council are protecting civilians and their property. We have received reports that criminals are using tea spots for criminal activities. Today, we managed to raid one location and found different types of drugs.
“We have started today, and we will not stop until we address the problem of drugs in Juba. Anyone caught selling or using drugs will be held accountable,” Mathok said.
The deputy mayor warned that enforcement operations would continue and urged people involved in drug-related activities to stop as authorities step up efforts to curb the sale and use of illicit substances.
The council said it would also continue removing unauthorised roadside structures as part of efforts to improve public safety and protect young people across Juba.
Drug abuse and the sale of illicit substances remain concerns for local authorities and communities.
The council says its enforcement campaign aims to curb illegal activities, improve public safety and protect vulnerable young people.
