VP Abdelbagi: South Sudan Opposition Alliance backs elections, urges peace dialogue
World leaders gather at the Palais des Nations in Geneva for the landmark climate finance summit.

Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi Akol says the South Sudan Opposition Alliance supports holding elections in December 2026 and called for inter-party dialogue to address the remaining provisions of the 2018 peace agreement.

Vice President Abdelbagi, who chairs the Service Delivery Cluster, made the remarks during the inauguration of newly renovated office premises in Juba Nabari, also known as Thongpiny, in Juba on Thursday.

Abdelbagi said the Transitional Government of National Unity has already been extended twice, from 2022-2024 and 2024-2026, in an effort to complete the implementation of the agreement.

“Let me be clear, the R-TGONU has been extended twice (2022-2024, 2024-2026) in an attempt to complete the implementation of the remaining provisions of the revitalized peace agreement on the resolution of the conflict in the Republic of South Sudan but here we are again!”

The Vice President said the Opposition Alliance supports holding elections on time and encouraged the parties to the peace agreement to use inter-party dialogue to resolve outstanding issues.
