Dongrin re-arrested after daughter’s funeral

Former Finance Minister Marial Dongrin Ater has been returned to detention at the National Security Service headquarters in Juba, days after he was briefly released to attend his daughter’s burial, a source closed to his family has said.

The source, who requested anonymity, says Ater was re-arrested on Monday evening after taking part in funeral rites in Rumbek.

“I can confirm that former Finance Minister Dr. Marial Dongrin was re-arrested and taken back to the facility days after he was granted permission to attend the burial of his daughter. He was taken on Monday evening,” he said:

Ater had been allowed to travel to Rumbek to join family members in mourning, after earlier requests to visit his daughter during her hospitalization were reportedly denied.

His daughter died on April 21 in a Nairobi hospital, where she had been receiving intensive care.

Ater has been in custody since late February, when he was arrested in Rumbek and transferred to Juba.

His detention is part of a broader crackdown targeting senior officials linked to the country’s financial and petroleum sectors.

Those detained include former Finance Minister Bak Barnaba Chol, former Central Bank Governor Moses Makur Deng, and other senior officials.

Authorities say the arrests are tied to investigations into alleged financial irregularities, although no formal charges have been publicly disclosed.
