Economic reforms committee to resume work after reconstitution – official

The government says the Ministerial High-level Committee on Economic Reform, which became inactive following the dissolution of the government, will resume its work once it is reconstituted.

The committee, previously headed by former East African Affairs Minister Pieng Deng Kuol, was left without several members after President Salva Kiir dissolved the government and removed a number of cabinet ministers.

Speaking to the state-run SSBC on Monday, the Acting Rapporteur of the committee and head of its Secretariat, Dr Augustino Ting Mayai, said the committee will be reconstituted.

Mayai, who is also the Director General of the National Bureau of Statistics, said the Deputy Chairperson of the committee and Minister of Information, Ateny Wek Ateny, convened a meeting to brief members and the technical team on the committee’s status.

He said the dissolution of the government resulted in the removal of some committee members, creating the need for a new composition.

“The committee will be reconstituted. And this reconstitution is now sitting with His Excellency the President to make decision on, and when that reconstitution is done, the committee will come back to work,” Mayai said.

Mayai said Monday’s meeting was also aimed at clarifying the committee’s current status and reassuring members that its work remains ongoing.

“I am here to announce that the committee has not died, there’s work to be done on it, and when that’s done, the committee will resume its activities and will continue to brief the public on a regular basis,” he said.

The committee was established to support and coordinate economic reform efforts and has previously provided public updates on its work.

Mayai said the committee will continue to brief the public once it is reconstituted and resumes its activities.
