Diplomatic communities in Juba have called on the government of South Sudan to fully follow through on its commitment to hold accountable those responsible for the killing of a United Nations staff member in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal State.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it received with great concern the news of the killing of Mr. Bol Rhoch Mayol Koul, a South Sudanese national who was serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) as a language assistant.

The incident occurred on December 15, 2025, in Wau town.

The Ministry, on behalf of the Government of South Sudan, extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and to UNMISS, describing the killing as a heinous crime.

The statement said the government unequivocally and categorically condemns any attack against personnel serving with UNMISS or other international organizations, noting that such acts are unacceptable and constitute a serious violation of the country’s laws.

The Ministry further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accountability, saying decisive steps are being taken to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice in accordance with the law. It also commended the leadership of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces Division Five for the swift arrest of a suspect linked to the killing.

Reacting to the incident, the embassies of Canada, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States condemned the killing of Mr. Bol Rhoch Mayol Koul.

The diplomatic missions expressed their deepest condolences to his family and to all UNMISS colleagues. They noted the statement issued by the Transitional Government affirming its commitment to accountability for those responsible for the act.

The embassies further called on the government to fully follow through the investigation to ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice.
