General Atem Salva Kiir takes over as Tiger Division commander
Major General Atem Salva Kiir, son of President Salva Kiir, has been appointed commander of the elite Republican Guard, Tiger Division, in what the SSPDF describes as a “significant leadership reshuffle” and a “strategic move” to strengthen military operations.
Colonel Garang Ateny Alier, Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations at the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces, says General Atem assumed his new duties this morning.
He replaces outgoing commander Major General Deng Madhang.
Speaking exclusively to Eye Radio, Colonel Garang says Atem will serve as both commander of the Tiger Division and commander of the Special Forces until further notice.
In a statement, Colonel Garang described the changes as a significant leadership reshuffle aimed at strengthening operational capabilities.
“Today, (09-09-2026) a significant leadership reshuffle took place within the military ranks. Maj Gen. Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit officially resumed his duties as the Commander of the Tiger Division, succeeding Maj Gen. Deng Madhang,” Garang wrote in a statement.
“In a strategic move to strengthen operational capabilities, Maj Gen. Atem will now also command the Special Forces till further notice, in addition to his role overseeing the Tiger Division. This dual command position highlights the government’s commitment to consolidating leadership within key military units to enhance efficiency and effectiveness,” he said.
“The change is expected to have a notable impact on the strategic direction and operational readiness of the armed forces moving forward,” he added.
Colonel Garang says the appointment is part of a routine army reshuffle and dismisses reports that Major General Deng Madhang was removed over wrongdoing.
He says Atem was appointed because of his military experience, training and leadership skills.
According to Colonel Garang, Atem previously commanded the Special Forces and has received military training both inside and outside South Sudan.
He says the Tiger Division serves as the country’s Republican Guard and is responsible for protecting senior government officials, including the President.
However, Colonel Garang says the division can also be deployed for military operations in different parts of the country when needed.
The SSPDF has urged soldiers and the public to ignore rumours and rely on official information from the army.
Colonel Garang has also called on troops to remain at their posts and continue carrying out their duties normally.
