Germany funds emergency nutrition response for vulnerable communities in Unity state

The Germany Embassy in Juba has provided funding to support emergency nutrition services for vulnerable communities in Guit County, Unity State, amid a severe and prolonged nutrition crisis.

The funding will support the Coalition for Humanity’s emergency nutrition response, targeting underserved communities in Kuach, Kuerguiny, Wathnyotna and Chotyiel, where access to nutrition services remains inadequate.

In a Tuesday statement following a signing ceremony, German Ambassador to South Sudan, Sebastian Brökelmann, said the support was aimed at helping vulnerable people, particularly women and children, affected by acute malnutrition.

“Germany is continuously supporting the People of South Sudan. We focus on the needs of the most vulnerable groups,” Brökelmann said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

“With this new funding, we want to support underserved communities in Guit County, Unity State. By funding the Coalition for Humanity’s project, we want to ensure that the affected vulnerable population, particularly women and children, have adequate support to combat acute malnutrition,” he added.

The emergency response will prioritise young children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, who face heightened risks associated with acute malnutrition.

The funding will also support displaced people, returnees and households whose access to food, healthcare, nutrition services and other essential assistance has been disrupted by conflict and recurrent flooding.

According to the German Embassy, the intervention will focus particularly on hard-to-reach communities that become isolated during flooding or periods of insecurity and have limited access to permanent nutrition facilities.

Guit County continues to face a prolonged nutrition emergency driven by acute food insecurity, flooding, displacement, localised insecurity, disease risks, disruptions to humanitarian assistance and restricted access.

The county is classified under Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Phase 4 for acute food insecurity and Phase 4 for acute malnutrition, indicating emergency-level conditions.

Ambassador Brökelmann reaffirmed Germany’s continued support for South Sudan, describing the country as Germany’s second-largest bilateral donor partner.

The funding is expected to help expand access to essential nutrition services for communities facing persistent humanitarian challenges in Unity State.
