GONU to be formed by January 22

The transitional government of national unity will be formed by January 22, according to Presidential press secretary Ateny Wek Ateny.

Mr Ateny says consultations are still underway over the final list of the ministers for the government of the national unity.

He told Eye Radio that the submission of the final list is supposed to be today according to the JMEC timetable.

“The government is working only to provide the names of 16 ministers, of which four of them will be women,” he said.

Mr Ateny added that the main thing that could threaten full implementation of the peace deal is the rejection of the creation of the 28 states by the SPLM in Opposition.

The SPLM-IO says border issues should have been discussed before the creation and considers the states to be against the peace agreement.

The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission has directed the two parties to negotiate the matter as a political issue.

The IO is yet to confirm these arrangements for announcing the cabinet by January 22.
