Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony has pledged government action to improve the deteriorating Juba-Lainya-Yei-Kaya Road following calls from residents to resume work on the route.
Residents of Yei River, Lainya and Morobo counties say the poor condition of the road and its bridges continues to disrupt the movement of people, goods and services across the state.
The concerns were raised during Vice President Dr. James Wani Igga and Governor Adil’s visit to Yei River County this week.
Residents and local leaders urged the government to prioritise the road ahead of the December 2026 general elections.
Speaking during his official tour of Lainya and Yei counties, Governor Adil acknowledged the poor condition of the road and said the government would intervene.
“The issue of the road is true; we saw it earlier. This is a main road under the responsibility of the national government. Work was started on it, and the plan is to tarmac it. Our President and the national government made preparations to construct the road up to Kaya, and from Yei to Maridi and Yambio.”
“But we said we could not wait, so we started scratching the bad spots, and we stopped at Bungu. Despite the challenges we are facing, when we get money, we will rehabilitate it up to Yei.”
“Before, I saw that the condition of the road was really bad, and we will try to fix those bad spots.”
Adil said the Juba-Yei Road remains a government priority, with plans to construct a tarmac road from Juba through Yei to Kaya, while also considering extending the road network from Yei to Maridi and Yambio.
He added that grading and rehabilitation had already started on some of the worst sections while the government awaits the planned tarmac construction.
The road is a key transport corridor connecting Juba with Lainya, Yei River and surrounding communities, supporting the movement of people, goods and essential services.
Adil alluded that the work to rehabilitate the road network might commence in November, 2026
