JMEC urges Kiir to stop pursuing Machar

The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission and international envoys have urged President Salva Kiir to stop pursuing Dr. Riek Machar and continue with the implementation of the peace agreement.

According to media reports, this was one of the recommendations issued during a meeting of the JMEC in Khartoum yesterday.

The meeting was attended by the chairman of JMEC, Festus Mogae and envoys from China, US, Norway and the European Union.

The Minister of Information, Michael Makuei, says President Salva is not pursuing Dr. Riek Machar.

“What they have decided is not in place and it is uncalled for, in the first place, Salva Kiir is not pursuing Riek Machar. The whereabouts of Riek Machar is in a forest of South Sudan and his whereabouts is known. If Riek Machar was being given a hot pursuit, he would have not gone outside Juba,” he argued.

During a press briefing at the conclusion of the meeting, Sudanese Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour said JMEC will hold another meeting supported by Britain on Friday in Ethiopia.
