Kenyan govt suspends hotel meetings for public health personnel following Ebola confirmation
NAIROBI — Kenya’s State Department for Public Health has suspended all hotel-based seminars, workshops, and conferences for its personnel to channel full operational focus toward contact tracing and emergency readiness.
The directive, enacted via an internal memo from Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, follows the confirmation of an imported case involving the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.
Ministry officials clarified that the restriction targets internal directorates, divisions, and departmental programs rather than representing a nationwide government ban.
Technical officers previously assigned to external workshops must remain available for rapid response duties. Any departmental exception requires explicit authorization from the Principal Secretary’s office.
The precautionary shift follows the detection of a patient who contracted the virus abroad, traveled through Uganda, and flew into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Despite isolation and medical intervention at a Nairobi facility, the patient succumbed to the illness, prompting health authorities to track exposed contacts and activate stringent containment protocols.
