President Salva Kiir Mayardit has ordered the extension of the current session of parliament to allow lawmakers to address urgent and critical national issues, including the national budget.

The directive was issued on Monday during a meeting between the President and the two Speakers: Jemma Nunu Kumba of the National Assembly and Mary Ayen Mijok of the Council of States.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Speaker Nunu announced that members of parliament will break for the Christmas holidays and are expected to resume sittings on January 5, 2026.
