Nilepet embarks on digital overhaul to link fragmented operations

• • 3 min read

Nile Petroleum Corporation, Nilepet, is pursuing a digital transformation initiative aimed at improving connectivity, strengthening security and linking its sites across South Sudan.

The state-owned Nile Petroleum Corporation (Nilepet) is rolling out a comprehensive digital transformation initiative aimed at tethering its geographically dispersed operations across South Sudan through centralized networks, enhanced security, and upgraded data infrastructure.

Spearheaded by Managing Director Eng. Emmanuel Athiei Ayual Makoi, the project attempts to tackle long-standing logistical hurdles and communication gaps between Nilepet’s Juba headquarters and its regional field sites.

According to Athiei, this digital transformation will provide the national oil company with a stronger technological foundation as it continues to develop its operations. The overhaul is structured around three core components: enterprise networking, physical security systems, and data center modernization.

Bridging the Distance

Operating across South Sudan’s vast and challenging terrain has historically complicated internal coordination for the national oil company. To mitigate this, Athiei’s administration is introducing a high-performance enterprise network infrastructure designed to interlink the headquarters with branch offices.

Alongside internet connectivity upgrades, the system integrates an IP PBX telephony solution intended to streamline internal voice communications.

While technical connectivity is expected to ease administrative friction, institutional analysts note that the success of such networks in South Sudan will heavily rely on addressing persistent regional challenges, including stable power supply and infrastructural reliability outside the capital.

Upgrading Security Infrastructure

The second pillar of the rollout targets physical security across Nilepet compounds. Plans include deploying a modern IP-based CCTV surveillance system at the Juba headquarters, paired with a centralized electronic access control system.

However, security experts point out that technical installations alone offer limited protection without structural backing. Effective site management will ultimately depend on clear operational procedures, rigorous training for security personnel, and prompt incident response protocols rather than hardware deployment alone.

Data Management and Technical Handover

The final phase centers on establishing a fully operational ICT data center equipped with resilient power architecture, alongside a complete migration to a Microsoft 365 email and collaboration platform. This backbone is intended to unify information management and shared applications across separate sites.

Significantly, contract terms embedded in the rollout mandate complete project documentation, structured staff training, rigorous testing reports, and a formal system handover directly to Nilepet’s internal ICT team.

Observers note that prioritizing technical knowledge transfer and local capacity building will be crucial to preventing the maintenance bottlenecks that frequently plague state-led tech initiatives in the region.

As Athiei’s administration pushes forward with the program, its ultimate test will not be the deployment of hardware, but whether Nilepet can maintain these systems independently, safeguard its networks against cyber vulnerabilities, and translate digital connectivity into lasting institutional efficiency.

Local Content Policy

The ICT Infrastructure and Digital Transformation project is being implemented by Sudd Connect Ltd (www.suddconnect.com) ; a local information, communication and technology company that specializes in High-speed dedicated fiber optic and wireless broadband internet, Advanced surveillance and CCTV camera systems, ICT infrastructure, networking, and technical support, Cloud solutions, IP-PBX telephony, and advanced IP-based security surveillance systems (CCTV and Biometric Access Control).

The implementation of this project underscore the importance of local content policy 2018 passed by the Ministry of Petroleum and approved by Council of Ministers that gives opportunities in employment, training, capacity building and local procurement of goods and services from South Sudanese-owned companies and businesses.
