South Sudan signs joint communiqué on East African monetary union by 2031

South Sudan signed the Joint Communiqué reaffirming its commitment to the East African Community integration agenda and the establishment of the East African Monetary Union by 2031.

According to a statement released by the Central Bank, the signing ceremony took place in Kampala during the 29th Ordinary Meeting of the East African Community (EAC) Monetary Affairs Committee (MAC).

The meeting brought together central bank officials from EAC member states to discuss monetary policy coordination, financial stability, and the implementation of the East African Monetary Union (EAMU).

Representing the Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Deputy Governor for Administration and Finance Hon. Weituey Luony signed the Joint Communiqué on behalf of the Bank.

During the meeting, Hon. Weituey said the Bank of South Sudan is implementing reforms in monetary policy and the financial sector, while working with regional central banks and development partners to build institutional capacity.

Held from July 20 to 24, 2026, the meeting was attended by Governors, Deputy Governors, and senior central bank officials from EAC Partner States. Participants reviewed economic developments in the region, discussed monetary policy coordination, and assessed progress toward the East African Monetary Union.

The meeting ended with the adoption of a Joint Communiqué outlining measures on monetary policy coordination, financial stability, and regional financial integration.
