Suspension against Guor Marial lifted

Author : | Published: Wednesday, January 21, 2015

Marathon Runner Guor Marial says his case against the South Sudan Athletics Federation has been resolved.

Earlier this month, the federation revoked the membership of 30-year-old Marial, potentially stopping him competing in Brazil, in a row over funding he had received from Olympic Solidarity.

Mr Marial was awarded the IOC scholarship to help him prepare for the Rio Olympics but the federation demanded he hand it over in accordance with its policy of putting athletes together for training and to compete under one umbrella and administration, rather than operating in separate entities.

“I’d like to inform you that the situation between me and the South Sudan federation has been solved and the suspension has been lifted,” wrote Mr Marial on his Facebook page.

“Thank you for all the supports and encouragement. Also, great thank to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to some officials in the South Sudan federation and to everyone who played great role in this issue. It’s a great step forward for the South Sudan federation and the people of South Sudan. I wish you all the best in 2015 year.”

Marial, who fled to the United States in 1994, was offered the opportunity to compete for Sudan at London 2012 due to South Sudan not being recognized by the IOC, an offer he turned down, saying: “If I ran for Sudan, I would be betraying my people”.

As a result, the IOC offered him the opportunity to compete as an independent athlete under the Olympic flag.

He will represent South Sudan at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
