The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has condemned the killing of one of its staff members in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, and called for an immediate and thorough investigation.

According to UNMISS, the staff member had been detained by security actors since December 15, during which time the Mission was engaging relevant authorities to locate him and secure his safe release.

UNMISS described the killing as a grave and unacceptable act and expressed deep sorrow over the loss. The Mission extended its condolences to the victim’s family, colleagues, and loved ones.

“We are devastated by the loss of our colleague,” said UNMISS Officer-in-Charge Anita Kiki Gbeho.

“The killing of United Nations personnel is unacceptable. We call for a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his detention and death and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”

Ms. Gbeho further emphasized the need for authorities to respect the safety and security of United Nations personnel operating in South Sudan.
