The UN Mission in South Sudan has condemned the killing of two peacekeepers in an ambush on a patrol travelling to Pajut in Jonglei State.

UNMISS said unidentified armed individuals attacked the patrol on Monday, killing two peacekeepers and injuring seven others.

Those injured include three peacekeepers, two South Sudan National Police Service personnel and two civilian staff.

The mission said it has deployed a Quick Reaction Force to secure the area and support the emergency response.

UNMISS Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Anita Kiki Gbeho, condemned the attack and called for a prompt investigation.

“Such deadly violence targeting UNMISS personnel who are serving to support peace in South Sudan is unacceptable. I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the peacekeepers who lost their lives and wish those injured a speedy recovery,” said Anita Kiki Gbeho, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS.

The mission warned that attacks against UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law, including international humanitarian law.

Gbeho called on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
