Govt restores traffic flow on Juba–Nimule highway after emergency repairs

• • 2 min read

The National Ministry of Roads and Bridges has restored traffic movement along a damaged section of the Juba–Nimule Highway in Kerepi Payam, Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria State, following emergency repair works aimed at easing transportation disruptions on the country’s main trade corridor.

The intervention came after a section of the highway became impassable when a truck overturned along the road, blocking traffic and affecting the movement of goods and essential supplies entering South Sudan.

Engineer Joseph Kuir from the Ministry of Roads and Bridges said the ministry swiftly deployed a response team in collaboration with RhinoStar Construction Company to rehabilitate the affected stretch of the highway.

“This section was completely closed after a truck overturned here, but it has now been removed and traffic movement restored,” Denkwir said.

He added that the maintenance work would continue beyond Kerepi Payam to address other damaged spots along the route.

“We are trying to fix all the bad sections from here up to Aru Junction and from Aru Junction to Juba,” he explained.

Engineer Guma George of RhinoStar Construction Company praised the cooperation of the local community, saying residents helped provide road construction materials that enabled the rapid response.

“As you can see, trucks are now passing easily without any problem,” George said.

He also urged motorists to exercise caution while driving through active construction zones.

“When drivers see machines and workers on the road, they should slow down as they pass before continuing with their journey,” he advised.

Georgensaid that the company had not faced major challenges during the operation due to the support from the surrounding community.

“The community has been very friendly. That is why we have been able to get materials and continue with the work,” he added.

Meanwhile, the head chief of Kerepi Payam, Angelo Modi Lamai, welcomed the government’s urgent intervention, saying residents were relieved to see the road repaired.

“The community is very happy and thankful because the government came to repair our road from Kerepi up to Juba,” Lamai said.

The 192-kilometre Juba–Nimule Highway is South Sudan’s primary international road link connecting the country to Uganda and Kenya. The route is considered vital for regional trade and integration within the East African Community.
