Humanitarian Affairs Minister leads delegation to assess needs in Malakal
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Albino Akol Atak, has led a high-level delegation to Malakal, Upper Nile State, to assess humanitarian needs and visit affected communities.
The delegation arrived in Malakal this morning and was received by the Upper Nile State government, led by Governor James Koang Chol, according to a statement from the minister’s office.
The mission will assess urgent humanitarian needs and engage with local authorities, affected communities and humanitarian partners.
The delegation includes the National Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, the WFP Acting Country Director and other government officials.
The ministry says the visit will also help identify priority areas requiring timely humanitarian assistance.
The visit comes amid reports of severe flooding in parts of Upper Nile State.
Relief and Rehabilitation Commission authorities in Manyo County say more than 380 houses and farms were recently destroyed by flooding following torrential rains.
The flooding reportedly displaced hundreds of people, who sought shelter in schools and other facilities.
Albino Chol, the county coordinator for the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, has called for urgent emergency assistance for the affected communities.
