Ferida says alleged threats to force her out of SPLM gubernatorial race resolved

• • 2 min read

Advocate Ferida Philip Nyanan, an aspirant for the SPLM flag bearer position in the upcoming Upper Nile State gubernatorial election, says alleged threats against her and 17 members of her delegation has been resolved following the intervention of Caretaker Governor James Kuong.

Nyanan had alleged that individuals she claimed were affiliated with the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) threatened her delegation in an attempt to pressure her to withdraw from the SPLM primaries.

Speaking to Eye Radio in Malakal, she said the individuals allegedly offered her money and later a senior ministerial position in the state government in exchange for abandoning her gubernatorial ambitions. She said she rejected both offers.

Nyanan further alleged that the individuals questioned whether a woman could govern Upper Nile State during the current sensitive period.

However, she confirmed that the dispute had been settled after the acting governor summoned both parties for discussions.

“The matter has now been resolved,” Nyanan told Eye Radio, adding that she had not initially reported the alleged threats to the relevant authorities because she expected them to stop.

The aspirant declared her intention to contest the SPLM primaries on October 9, outlining a programme focused on unity, security, development and improved public services.

Her priorities include supporting the return of displaced communities, strengthening healthcare services, maintaining water networks, rehabilitating roads and encouraging young people to participate in development rather than take up arms.

The incident comes as the SPLM prepares to conduct its internal primaries in Malakal on October 29 ahead of the general elections scheduled for December 22, 2026.

The allegations of threats have not been independently verified, and Eye Radio reported that it had not obtained a response from the SSPDF regarding the claims.
