The Sudan Transitional Sovereign Council has paid tribute to the late General Joseph Lagu, describing his life as one of distinguished service and his legacy as marked by patriotic dedication and historic contributions.
Late general Jospeh Lagu Yanga died in Juba on Tuesday at the Age of 95.
This occurred two days after this family asked the South Sudanese public for prayers as he was admitted to a hospital in Juba.
“The Transitional Sovereignty Council mourns, with profound sorrow and grief, the passing of Major General Joseph Lagu, the former First Vice President under former President Field Marshal Jaafar Mohamed Nimeiri. He passed away in the city of Juba, following a distinguished life of service and a legacy marked by patriotic and historic contributions,” the statement reads.

President Kiir has declared national mourning in honor of the late general, ordering all national flags across South Sudan and at the country’s diplomatic missions abroad to fly at half-mast until General Lagu is laid to rest.
The President also said he would personally bid the veteran leader a state farewell.
General Lagu became the leader of the southern resistance movement in 1963, giving renewed direction to Anyanya One during the first Sudanese civil war.
The movement fought against the Sudanese government in a struggle that began in 1955 and ended with the signing of the 1972 Addis Ababa Agreement, which granted southern Sudan regional autonomy.
Beyond his military leadership, Lagu served as president of the High Executive Council of the autonomous southern region, second vice president of Sudan and a diplomat.
