Tonj South authorities seize 1,700 rounds of ammunition, detain suspect

• • 1 min read

Authorities in Tonj South County, Warrap State, say security forces have seized 1,700 rounds of ammunition and detained a suspect accused of transporting them illegally.

According to a statement from the Office of the County Commissioner, the ammunition was intercepted at the Makuei-Karthieth security checkpoint on Saturday last week.

The statement says the ammunition was concealed among clothes inside a plastic bag in an attempt to evade security checks.

The suspect was reportedly travelling from Wau to Juba in a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado when security personnel intercepted the vehicle.

Caretaker Commissioner Gordon Makuer Tiau commended the security forces for their vigilance and warned travellers against the illegal transportation of ammunition, saying it undermines peace efforts and contributes to violence.

The county authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the shipment and identify any other individuals who may be involved.
