Minister Ateny heads to Saudi Arabia for UNESCO Global AI Ethics Forum

Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services Ateny Wek Ateny departed Juba today for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to represent South Sudan at the 4th UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.

According to statement by the Ministry of ICT, the conference, running from September 14 to September 17, brings together world leaders, policymakers, and technical experts to examine regulatory frameworks, institutional capacities, and ethical standards for artificial intelligence development.

UNESCO and the Saudi Data and AI Authority are co-hosting the event, which coincides with Saudi Arabia’s designation of 2026 as the Year of Artificial Intelligence.

Ateny transited through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, before proceeding to Riyadh.

The global forum serves as the primary implementation platform for UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, focusing on policy development, protection of human rights, and regional coordination across member states.
