AU legal, military experts in Juba to probe Chief Kuol Deng’s death

Legal and military experts from the African Union are in Juba to investigate the killing of an Abyei paramount chief.

Chief Kuol Deng Kuol was killed earlier this year, raising fears of possible outbreak of violent retribution in the disputed region.

The team, which arrived in Juba yesterday, is headed by Ex-Mauritian Prime Minister, Anil Gayan. it includes representative from South Sudan and Sudan.

Speaking to Eye Radio from ministry of interior the minister Anil Gayan said that he hopes the investigative team will be able to report soon.

“We started our work in Khartoum and we are now in Juba, and we are proposing to go to Abyei. And we will – I hope -summit our report as soon as possible, ” he added.

The team has previously been in Khartoum. They will stay in Juba for three days and then travel to Abyei to continue their investigations.

In May, the nine Ngok Dinka Paramount Chief, Kuol Deng Kuol was killed allegedly by the Misseriya armed men when their UN convoy was held for some hours in Abyei.

A UN peacekeeper was also killed in the incident.
