Two women have been seriously injured in a land mine explosion in Bor town this afternoon.

“They were cooking in the kitchen, and then they changed their fire place to another section of the house where actually the mine was,” the town Mayor, Nhial Majak, explains. “Due to heating, the mine was activated and it exploded.”

Mr. Nhial said that the two women are undergoing treatment at Bor teaching hospital.

He said Bor town is expanding into areas that have not been demined properly.

Mayor Nhial fearedthere is high risk of mines in the area and called upon demining teams to urgently come back to Bor town.

On other matters, Mayor Nhial Majak said lack of a metrological communication network to give early warning information about potential weather-related disasters is one of the biggest challenges facing the country.

He says that the National government should establish forecasting stations that can give early warnings of floods and heavy rain and other serious weather conditions in the country.

“We need to have weather forecasting station that can be telling people exactly what to expect, so here everything is just guess work,” he said.

“We also should get flood warning systems -when the river Nile gets full seasonally -we should be told about this, and the people of environment should monitor this.”

Every year, South Sudan is impacted by a number of severe weather conditions such as heavy thunderstorms, strong winds, lightening, flooding and drought.
